Braces (diagram)

When you have braces, it’s very important to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your treatment. If you need help choosing the right toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss, please ask us and we can help you choose the right products for your teeth and appliance.

Here is a Brushing with Braces 101 tutorial to get you used to your new routine.

Types of braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colourful smile.

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces but do not require the use of elastics, instead using a specialized clip to help the archwire guide teeth into place. This treatment may mean fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth.

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are less visible on your teeth. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts.

Clear aligners are a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable acrylic trays that straighten your teeth with the same results as traditional braces. Not only are the Invisalign® aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are a breeze.

Invisalign

A viable and popular option for adults, teens, and children, Invisalign® uses a series of virtually invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners. Invisalign® aligners are removable so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem.

Invisalign® may also be a comfortable option and may mean that you can spend less time at orthodontist appointments getting adjustments. Because the process is developed using state-of-the art 3D technology, you may also be able to see a virtual rendering of your teeth throughout your entire treatment plan.

How does Invisalign® work?

You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move little by little, until they have in their final positions. You’ll visit us about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages nine to 15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but these will vary from case to case.

Sleep apnea

Are you drowsy during the day with no explanation? Do you snore loudly or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing stops periodically during sleep, as many as 20-30 times per hour.

Orthodontic intervention to support Sleep Apnea may include the use of oral devices to develop the jaw’s position, bringing it forward to allow the tongue adequate space and opening the airway.

In some cases chronic facial and neck pain as well as recurring headaches may be due to Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and pain in and around your Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ).

Orthodontic intervention to support TMJ and TMD treatment may include the use of oral devices to correct the alignment of your jaw to relieve pain and improve jaw function.
